Oonagh McFerran

When oil runs out in approximately forty years time, I think there will be wars as people fight for the oil that is left. The price of oil, even in twenty years, may be so expensive that people will be forced to use other energy resources, such as coal, nuclear energy, wind and solar power.

If we are forced to do this our coal supplies will run out faster, and radioactive pollution will be given off from nuclear power stations. The countryside will be an eyesore with windmills and other ways of producing renewable energy resources.

I think the only reasonable solution is to make fuels and chemicals from coal, we used to before we found oil, and to build wind-mills in designated areas, with only so many in each area, so that we will still have some areas of  natural beauty.

Niall Dowds

When oil runs out, materials that are made from oil will be very expensive. Materials, such as glass, will be recycled on a large scale. Only the extremely rich will be able to afford materials made out of oil. Alternative fuels will have to be found to use for central heating instead of oil.

Before the oil runs out, and when there is very little left, the large rich countries will have all the oil. There will be fighting over oil if it becomes very scarce and precious, but most importantly expensive.

Oil wells will be shut down all across the world, and hundreds and thousands will lose their jobs. Governments will be sending expeditions to find new oil supplies.

Mary McKeague

It won’t be very long now until a main source of fuel in the world will be non-existent. The little bit left will become very expensive, and so newer, cheaper and less polluting resources will be used. This could be solar or wind power.

Another source of energy that people may resort to is nuclear energy. I’m worried that if we resort to nuclear energy that the radioactive pollution will harm our health and our environment.

It’s quite good running out of oil as it will keep our world in a better state for future generations. It will force us to use alternative sources of energy, which we should have been using all along.

  Louise Corrigan

I think that coal will become very precious to us as well as oil. Oil is useful in so many ways that we take for granted. In the last few years of oil, prices will soar through the roof, so people will use other sources of energy if they can't afford it.

Other energy sources we will use will be wind, solar and nuclear power. The more nuclear stations we use the more radioactive pollution will get out unless our technology can then stop it. Wind and solar power will become part of our everyday lives. Now only advanced houses and cars use them.

Recycling will be a necessity and people won’t waste anything. Don’t look on it as a daunting thing because, eventually, it really is going to happen, but by then we will have other means of energy. -  Recycle, yes, but don’t worry about it!

Maria Carlin

Obviously, if we keep wasting oil it will run out. As the oil supply gradually decreases, I think prices will go up steeply as the oil will be in demand. We will have to use alternative sources of energy, or else the other fuels may also run out.

If oil runs out there will be a shortage of fuel and people may fear that the other fuels will run out. This may mean that people will fight over or hoard the fuels.

If we use nuclear energy people might be worried about radioactive pollution from nuclear power stations.

Geologists say we’ve only got about 40 years of our oil supply left, so I think now is the time to start being more careful with our resources.

  Paul  Walsh

As the supplies of oil run out it will become more expensive. Therefore, deposits of coal and gas that were previously not worth mining will become more competitive. The coal and gas will be cheaper than oil but dearer than it had been before. All fuels will be more expensive.

As fuel sources get expensive we will look to alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar power. We already use these sources but I think we will use them more efficiently. We will get better at converting and storing this energy.

We have got nuclear power and it is fine when it goes according to plan, but when it doesn’t, the results can be disastrous for hundreds of years. Nuclear fallout is radioactive and it affects the land, our health and future generations.

Lastly, something we can all do now is conserve energy.

Crude oil is going to run out one day. In preparation for that day I think people should try to use renewable resources to power our cars and heat our homes. The sun provides a perfect opportunity for snatching up a resource that won’t run out for quite a few million years. Wind and water are also good and, hopefully, should not run out either.

Nuclear power is a bad source of power because it produces a very harmful waste that can kill if you are exposed to it.

We have about forty years of crude oil left, after that we will have to depend on other resources. Hopefully future generations will learn from our foolish and greedy exploitation of crude oil.

There will probably be a war over the last remnants of the oil and cause poverty in many countries around the world.

Krista Hughes

When the oil runs out there will be no plastic because we use oil to make it. Some people don’t realise that we should save energy and oil so it could last even longer.

We’ll use alternative energy sources, like wind power, solar power and tidal power. I also think we will turn to nuclear energy, but I am worried about radioactive pollution from the nuclear power stations.

When there is less oil it will be very expensive. I also think that if alternative energies are so good, why don’t we use them now instead of wasting the other energy sources.

  Ria Doherty

As oil begins to run out we should to use alternative forms of energy. This will prepare us well and help oil to last longer.

Alternative energy forms could be wind and solar power. These are renewable sources that never run out.

However as oil runs out, other fuels and it will become a lot more expensive, increasing competition between companies. People will fight and argue over the fuel that is left. People will be continuously seeking for new ways and means of finding supplies of oil.

Some say nuclear energy should be used, but others are worried about radioactive pollution from nuclear power stations.

Geologists have even pointed out that we may only have about forty years oil supply left.

  Claire Reynolds

Here are my views on what will happen when the supply of oil runs out.

It is being said that oil may have run out in forty years. We should use this information to find out what to do.

People are saying what alternative energy sources we will use when the oil has run out, but what is stopping us using these alternative energy sources now when there is still some oil left. This would then help to preserve the oil that is left at the minute so that it can be used to make other materials, such as plastic.

If we are to use alternative energy sources they should be renewable, such as wind power or solar power, because if we use other fossil fuels, such as gas or coal. They will soon run out as the oil is, and then we will have the same problem as we have now.

I do not think that nuclear power should be one of the alternative sources as it is very dangerous and people do not want it to be used in case of a nuclear disaster.

Donna Farren

Some geologists say that we have only got about forty years supply of oil left, while other people say that we are already running out of oil in the North Sea.

As the oil runs out it may become more expensive because of the scarceness of it. So some people will start to buy coal instead, but then, due to the great demand and dependence on coal, as oil runs out, the prices will rise, and coal will also soon run out.

Alternative, renewable energy sources, like solar power and tidal power, will be gently introduced. I don’t think that nuclear power will be hugely popular, mainly because many people will be concerned about the dangerous health hazards that will be involved.

I think that more people will become aware, when oil runs out, that it makes sense to recycle as much as possible.

Rory Mullan

When oil runs out we will be forced to use alternative sources of energy, such as wind power. Many nuclear factories will be built and nuclear power will be extremely important. Nuclear energy is extremely dangerous and so we will probably have to take many precautions when using it.

The price of oil will rise substantially as it will be extremely rare, and because of this we have to try and find other sources of energy. Wars will break out all over as countries will be fighting for the last remaining oil. These wars will be very short as people will use nuclear weaponry.

Coal will run out extremely quickly, because it would be the best source of energy we have.

Ciaran McShane

I think that when oil runs out the human race will look for alternative sources of energy. They will look for either non-renewable sources, such as coal, or they could look for renewable sources, such as wind power, water power, solar power, biomass power or geothermal power.

As oil is the starting material of many man made fibres and also many types of plastic, other alternative fibres will have to be produced and more and more plastics recycled.

Before crude oil runs out, (there are about forty years of oil still left) other alternative renewable sources of energy will have to be utilised. As Ireland has a wet climate, there is a plentiful supply of water. Large rivers could easily be dammed and hydroelectric power stations could be built. This is already happening on the River Liffey in Wicklow, and on the River Shannon. Ireland also has some very windy sites and many more wind farms could be constructed to produce electricity. Some small wind farms already exist near Corky and Limavady. Other alternative renewable energy sources that could be used are biomass and the planting of fast growing willow trees.

Plastic materials already in existence could be recycled, and people using more public transport, (trains/busses), and stopping using so many cars could conserve the remaining oil reserves.

Coal is still fairly plentiful and will become a more used fuel, and from coal, many useful products can be made.
